Overview

• The Kuwaiti Board in General Dentistry (R1/R2) is part of the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization (KIMS). It is a 2-year residency program that involves clinical teaching in the Ministry of Health polyclinics and specialized dental centers.
 
• The residents of the program will be promoted to R1 and R2 through a series of qualifying examinations/assessments conducted at each level in the presence of external examiner(s).

• Application to the program is announced by KIMS. All applicants must adhere to Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization rules and regulations. 

• Applicants can enroll in the program after successful completion of the internship rotations.

Aims

•  The primary aim of the residency program, both at the general and advanced levels, is to educate and train residents to enable them to practice in the discipline of general dentistry and its other specialties.

•  The residents shall acquire the requisite basic knowledge, skills, and attitude to enable them to practice with competency, compassion, and professionalism in the different fields of dentistry.

•   The residents work in a learning environment that is optimally conducive to inculcating skills of problem-solving while exercising evidence-based critical judgment regarding treatment planning, diagnosis, and management.

•     The residents imbibe the habit of self-learning to facilitate continuing life-long professional development. 

Objectives

- The residency program is designed to provide education and training to enable the residents to meet the stated core objectives of the program, At the end of the residency training, the resident shall be able to: 

 

- Demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of the dental and oral health policies applied in Ministry of Health polyclinics and specialty dental centers.

- Demonstrate skills in clinical problem-solving and independent decision-making based on the best available evidence, and the ability to deliver quality care in all the clinical disciplines of general dentistry. 

​

- Recognize the complexity and limitation of dental services that can be performed in the polyclinics, therefore,exercising judgment to make specialty referrals when appropriate, and to be able to coordinate treatment when other health care providers are needed. 

​

- Compete with confidence the patient’s dental needs and able to meet those needs by successfully designing a well-integrated treatment plan and performing the indicated procedures in all disciplines of general dentistry. 

​

- Deal promptly and effectively with complications and emergencies, which may arise during treatment.

​

- Acknowledge the importance of dental records including diagnosis, treatment plan, consent form, and therapeutic.

​

- Communicate and deal with patients and their families with empathy and understanding.

​

- Recognize the role of teamwork and function as an effective member within a team. 

​

- Manage time effectively and Utilize information technology efficiently. 

​

- Plan and conduct educational programs for the community on matters relating to the promotion of oral health and prevention of dental diseases.
